Sloane Residence

Santa Fe, New Mexico | Adobe

The Owners of this residence live primarily in London, England. However, with strong family ties in New Mexico and segments of the family dispersed between California and New York, the Owners wanted to create a gathering place where brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandmother could come together several times a year. The home was designed to be a collection of intimate indoor and outdoor, public and private places, a comfortable fit for the family alone, and capable of gracious accommodation for gatherings of extended family and friends.

The home features many locally found  and  manufactured natural building materials. The exterior walls are adobe and the floors throughout are flagstone or earthen. Vigas and beams are locally sourced and the decking is of sustainably harvested tropical Ipe. Walls on the interior are covered in clay-based plasters. Local craftspeople employed in the construction of the home included, adoberos, stonemasons, earth plasterers and timber framers. Doors and cabinetry were locally hand made and all fireplace screens and tools were hand crafted by a blacksmith from Southern New Mexico. Local craftsmanship greatly reduces toxic manufacture, transport and packaging while creating high quality employment and boosting local economy.
